Add WhatsApp to a claimed and verified Google Business Profile from Edit profile → Contact → Chat, choose WhatsApp, paste your click-to-chat URL (https://wa.me/ + country code + number, no spaces or plus sign), and save. Google says chat options are for select regions and may be missing for your category or listing; if you also add Text message, only SMS shows to customers. The button opens WhatsApp — it does not store leads. Without a list (CRM), Maps chats become another pile next to Instagram DMs.
That is the India 2026 answer in one paragraph.

This is not our 3 September post (do you still need a website if Instagram and WhatsApp already bring work) — that is website yes/no. It is not the 5 September post (WhatsApp Business App vs Platform / API) — that is which WhatsApp product you are on. It is not a rewrite of the 26 August capture post or the 28 August ₹99 packing list. This page is the Maps/Search chat button, then what happens after the tap.
What Google actually turned on (and what it replaced)
Google’s old in-profile Business Profile chat and call-history features ended on 31 July 2024 (Google’s retirement notice). For eligible listings, customers can now reach you through a WhatsApp or text message contact option instead — documented in Chat with customers from your Business Profile and the Chat section of Edit your Business Profile.
Important limits, in Google’s own words or tips:
| Fact | Source / note |
|---|---|
| Profile must be claimed and verified | Google chat help |
| Chat options available for select regions; may not appear on your profile | Google chat help + Edit profile Chat note |
| Choose WhatsApp *or* Text message in Chat | Google chat help |
| If you add both, only the text message option is shown to customers | Google tip on the same page |
| WhatsApp field takes a click-to-chat URL; SMS takes a phone that can receive texts | Google chat help |
| Different Business Profiles can share the same WhatsApp link | Google tip |
| Old GBP inbox is gone — chats live in WhatsApp / SMS, not inside Google’s retired chat history | Retirement notice + current chat article |
Local SEO explainers such as BrightLocal report that customers mainly see the WhatsApp/SMS chat control on mobile Search/Maps, not desktop. Google’s own chat article does not spell out a desktop guarantee. Test your listing on a phone after you save.
India how-tos (QuadLayers, Qrenzy, Mentegoz and others) walk the same Edit → Contact → Chat path and add troubleshooting when the option is missing (unverified profile, category, region rollout, wrong UI). Use them for screenshots; treat Google’s pages as the rulebook.
Build the click-to-chat URL first
Before you open Google, prepare the URL WhatsApp expects:
- Start with
https://wa.me/ - Add the full number with country code. India is
91. - Strip
+, spaces, brackets, and dashes. - Example shape:
https://wa.me/9198XXXXXXXX(use *your* live WhatsApp Business number).
That format is the public WhatsApp click-to-chat pattern Google points to under “WhatsApp URL guidelines.” Prefer a WhatsApp Business number your team actually monitors during open hours — not a personal SIM that goes quiet after dinner. Optional ?text= pre-fill messages are fine for websites and QR codes; for GBP, keep the URL clean (wa.me + digits) unless you have tested a pre-fill and know Google accepts it on your listing.
Step-by-step: add WhatsApp on Google Business Profile
Follow Google’s published sequence (chat help):
- Go to your Business Profile (Search or Maps, signed in as owner/manager).
- Open Edit profile, then Contact.
- Next to Chat, select Edit.
- Open the Chat drop-down.
- Select WhatsApp (not Text message, if WhatsApp is what you want customers to see).
- In the URL field, paste your click-to-chat URL.
- Save.
Then, from a phone that is not already chatting with you:
- Search your business on Google or open it in Maps.
- Tap the WhatsApp / chat control if it appears.
- Confirm the chat opens to the correct number.
- If nothing shows after a short wait, re-check verification, category, and whether SMS was also saved (remember: SMS wins if both are set).
If Chat is missing entirely, Google’s own line applies: the option is for select regions and might not be available for your Business Profile. India how-tos commonly blame unverified status, unsupported categories, or UI differences between Search, Maps, and the mobile app — fix verification and category first, then wait a day before you assume a permanent block.
Service-area businesses (home services, consultants who do not meet clients at a shop) should also keep address and service-area settings honest under Google’s guidelines for representing your business — that is a separate hygiene pass from the chat button, but suspensions often start with NAP mismatches, not with WhatsApp.
After the button works: where do the chats go?
Nowhere magical. They land in WhatsApp on the phone (or WhatsApp Business / linked devices) you configured. Google is not your CRM. There is no Google “GBP WhatsApp inbox” replacing the feature that died in 2024.
So the everyday failure mode for Indian clinics, tuition centres, salons, and home-service crews looks like this:
- Someone finds you on Maps.
- They tap WhatsApp.
- You reply from the phone — good.
- Three more chats arrive from Instagram, a missed call, and a website form nobody checks.
- Nobody logged name, intent, follow-up date, or source.
- The warm lead is buried under stickers by Friday.
Adding the button increases that risk if you were already losing DMs. The unique half of this article is not another screenshot of Edit profile. It is: a WhatsApp button without a CRM is just another chat pile.
The capture habit (same day, one list)
When a Maps WhatsApp chat is a real enquiry, log it the same day into one list your team opens:
- Name / number
- Source:
GBP WhatsApp(vs Instagram, call, website form) - What they asked
- Status: new / quoted / booked / lost
- Next action + date
That habit is the same capture logic as our 26 August post on losing WhatsApp and Instagram enquiries — here the new pipe is Google. You do not need HubSpot Professional to start. You need a list someone will open.
Away messages and quick replies in WhatsApp Business help when you are with a patient or on a job site. They do not create history, ownership, or a follow-up queue.
If chats from Maps (and everywhere else) already arrive and then vanish
Start with the live Website + CRM Lead System at ₹99/day. In plain language: a website with an enquiry or appointment form; a CRM with lead status, notes, and history; one business email on your domain; hosting; initial setup; and lifetime tech support for that system. ₹99/day · ₹9,000 for 3 months, billed quarterly. Demo before onboarding. Setup in 7 working days after you share details — this package only, not custom apps, shops, or branding. No long contracts on that page’s terms. Line-by-line packing list: What you actually get in a ₹99/day website and lead system.
What the ₹99 desk does not do: it is not paid ads, not a WhatsApp Business Platform / API plan, not a Meta green-tick product, and not a promise that every Maps chat auto-imports without a human logging or a separate automation quote. You still answer WhatsApp. The desk gives the public page people trust after they Google you, plus a list so GBP chats, Instagram DMs, and form leads stop living only on one SIM.
If the gap is “nobody posts,” that is the separate ₹199/day organic social plan: we plan, design, and post; ads are not included; priced per day, billed quarterly; start within 3 working days after onboarding. Listing hygiene and local SEO sit under digital marketing when the job is bigger than a packaged desk. Custom sites and apps: web development.
Primary CTA: take the demo on the ₹99/day website + CRM before you pay.
Secondary CTA: if posting is the bottleneck, see ₹199/day organic social (ads not included).
Book either path: contact or call +91 92705 93725, 10:00–19:00 IST.
Quick checks before you call it “done”
- Profile claimed and verified
- Chat → WhatsApp only (or accept that SMS will win if both are set)
https://wa.me/91…opens the right Business number- Tested on a customer’s phone in Search and Maps
- Website URL on the listing points to a page you own (not only a link-in-bio)
- Hours and phone match what you answer
- Same-day rule: real GBP WhatsApp enquiries go into one CRM list with source tagged
We run that same checklist on our own Virar West listing — verification and honesty first, vanity metrics never.
## FAQ
How do I add WhatsApp to my Google Business Profile in India?
Open your claimed and verified Business Profile → Edit profile → Contact → Chat → choose WhatsApp → paste your click-to-chat URL (https://wa.me/ + country code + number) → Save. Steps are from Google’s chat help. Availability depends on region and profile; India is commonly supported in practice, but Google does not publish a permanent country checklist on that page.
Why is there no WhatsApp button on my GBP?
Common causes: profile not verified; Chat not offered for your region or category; you saved Text message as well (Google shows only SMS if both are set); or you are checking on a surface where the control has not synced yet. Re-read Google’s “select regions” note, remove SMS if you want WhatsApp, and test on mobile after a wait.
WhatsApp vs SMS on Google — which should I pick?
Pick the channel your team actually answers. For most Indian SMBs that is WhatsApp. If you enable both, Google’s tip says only the text message option is shown to customers — so choose deliberately.
Does WhatsApp on Maps work on desktop?
Google’s chat article does not promise a desktop customer button. Guides such as BrightLocal report the chat option mainly for mobile Search/Maps users. Always verify on a phone.
Where are GBP WhatsApp chats stored?
In WhatsApp (or SMS), not in a Google Business Profile inbox. The old GBP chat history feature ended 31 July 2024. Log important chats into your own CRM the same day.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API to put WhatsApp on Google?
No. The GBP Chat field is a click-to-chat URL to a number on WhatsApp / WhatsApp Business. The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) is a different product for teams, templates, and scale — covered in our App vs API article. TechyXen does not sell the API.
What should I buy from TechyXen if Maps chats are piling up unanswered?
If you lose enquiries: ₹99/day website + CRM (₹9,000 / 3 months, billed quarterly; demo first; 7 working days after details for that package only). If you need consistent organic posting: ₹199/day social (ads not included). For listing strategy beyond the button, see digital marketing or contact.
